# Spontaneous daily torpor (Zoology)
> Endothermic vertebrates have evolved a variety of physiological strategies to cope with energetic challenges (Geiser 2004). One such strategy causes a reduction in metabolic rate and tolerance of sub-euthermic body temperature in the state of total inactivity: torpor.[^1]
