[[Classification is where things go (on the library shelf). Cataloguing is what we call things (i.e. subject headings, tags, etc).]][^1]
## classification systems
*Library warrant*—i.e., how many books etc there are likely to be on any given topic—should be the foundation of developing a classification system.[^2]
- Enumerative classification
- Synthetic classification
- Hierarchical classification
Other considerations:
- **generalities class** (e.g. general encyclopaedias, current affairs, etc)
- **form classes** (e.g. for literature—poetry, drama, prose, etc)
- **form divisions**—for subjects ‘presented in a particular bibliographic form’ such as dictionaries, periodicals, etc.[^3]
[[When considering a classification system, ‘resources that are used together should be shelved together.’]][^4]
### Universal Decimal Classification (UDC)
> ‘UDC is one of the most widely used classification schemes for all fields of knowledge. It is used in libraries, bibliographic, documentation and information services in over 130 countries around the world and is published in over 40 languages.’[^5]

### Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC)
> [[‘In the print version of DDC, numbers are written in groups of three digits, with a space between each group—e.g., 344.063 635 1. This is done to make remembering and writing numbers easier.’]][^2]
[[Some copy cataloguing sources show the segmentation of DDC numbers. This enables easier identification of the shorter numbers]][^3]
